Young Pups Round 1 Winners
Round 1 at East Fremantle Oval got off to a great start with a young Colts’ side defeating West Perth by 21 points; 9.6=60 to 5.9=39
In what was at times a scrappy affair, as often happens in round 1, the East Fremantle boys’ excellent defensive pressure forced West Perth in to error which resulted in only 25 inside 50’s for the entire game. With midfielders Fraser Perry (26 possessions), Tom Bennett (22) and Jordan Snadden (18) leading the possession count it was no wonder that inside 50 count went East Fremantle’s way 40-25. Whilst we didn’t make the most of our opportunities Callum Ellis did provide an important focal target up forward, kicking 2 goals from 14 possessions and 5 marks. Nathan Morton-Smith, in his Colts’ debut, led a strong backline all day, with his strong aggression and competitive spirit.
This weekend the Colts take on a Subiaco team that will be very keen to rebound after being beaten by premiership favourites South Fremantle in their round 1 clash.
East Fremantle 9.6=60 def. West Perth 5.9=39
Goals; 2 C.Ellis, 1 J.Williamson, G.Tomelty, J.Cripps, J.Snadden, C.Holmes, J.Gittos, P.Delaney
Best; C.Ellis, N.Morton-Smith, M.Sewell, C.Strnadica, T.Bennett
Reserves off To a Winning Start in Round 1
Following on from the Colts’ win, the Reserves were keen to continue their winning from their final pre-season game a week ago when they took to the field against 2013 Reserves Grand Finalists West Perth. Our emerging senior players got off to a great start, using the ball efficiently and repelling many of the West Perth forward thrusts and by half time had opened up a commanding 31 point lead. But as you’d expect from a side that played in last year’s GF, West Perth kept coming in the second half and at one point late in the final quarter closed that gap to within a few points. To our boys’ credit they dug deep, steadied and held on to take a 10 point win. Tom Hooker, after playing the pre-season fixtures in the League side, was outstanding in the midfield, particularly in first half, working tirelessly both ways. Round 1 Captain, Jarryd Lindsay, was a tower of strength across the half back line, along with Miles Franklin (in his Reserves debut) and with the dynamic duo, in small forwards Louis Cronan and Tom Bowey (3 goals each) there were winners all across the ground.
Like the Colts, the Reserves side will face a Subiaco team that lost their round 1 contest against last years’ Reserves Premiers South Fremantle.
East Fremantle 11.11=77 def. West Perth 10.7=67
Goals; 3 L.Cronan, T.Bowey, 2 D.Anthony, 1 T.Chalwell, C.Fannon, R.Wallis
Best; J.Lindsay, T.Hooker, M.Franklin, T.Bowey, L.Cronan
A reminder that both the Colts and Reserves will be playing their fixture this weekend at East Fremantle Oval at 9am and 11:25am respectively.
16’s Academy In the Winners’ Circle
After a nail-biting round 1 loss to Perth last Sunday the 16’s Academy boys were pumped to take on West Perth, following the League match on Saturday. With a notable improvement in their attack on the ball and their opponent, the young East Freo boys took control of the game through many West Perth forced turnovers. Although the half-time result did not reflect the control the boys’ had on the game our boys did turn in at half-time with their noses in front. As the game went on our ball movement and disposal became more efficient and it was in the final quarter that the East Fremantle 16’s were able to break open the game and run away with a very spirited victory, to make it 4 from 4 for the day for the mighty Sharks.
The 16’s will play Subiaco this Saturday at East Fremantle Oval, starting at 2:10pm.
East Fremantle 7.10=52 def. West Perth 3.6=24
Best; M.Burton, C.Davies, J.Sutherland
