Heading into Round 7, this was a genuine finals-shaping clash. East Fremantle, having built momentum in recent weeks, including a strong Round 6 win against the Demons, were sitting just outside the top group and needing a solid performance against a quality opponent. Claremont, meanwhile, were firmly in the upper tier of the ladder, making them one of the hardest teams to break down in season 2026.

 

East Fremantle started strongly, controlling early stoppages through clean handball chains and forward pressure. Claremont matched their intensity but struggled to convert inside 50 opportunities.

Claremont responded in the second quarter, lifting their pressure, generating inside more 50s, hitting the scoreboard, and keeping the Sharks scoreless in the second term.

The third, was the defining term. Claremont’s midfield took control around the contest, led by their clearance work and outside run. With all Claremont’s work in the middle, it didn’t pay off though as they only kicked one goal. East Fremantle continued to fight, also kicking a single major.

Claremont kicked away early in the final quarter, however East Fremantle mounted a late challenge, lifting their pressure and hitting the scoreboard through multiple forward entries, kicking two goals including debutant Sienna Lilly kicking her first goal in the WAFLW. Meg McAullay kicked a late goal to put the Sharks in front, and East Fremantle held on to win by 1 point.

Although East Fremantle’s late surge got them the win, it was a very tight finish with the Sharks defence standing strong in the dying seconds to keep them close to the seasons contending teams.
