East Fremantle suffered a disappointing 42-point defeat to Swan Districts on Saturday afternoon, falling 16.9 (105) to 9.9 (63) at Steel Blue Oval.

The Sharks were on the back foot early, with Swan Districts bursting out of the blocks to kick six goals in the opening quarter. Despite a spirited response through patches of the contest, East Fremantle was unable to bridge the early gap as the home side maintained control throughout the afternoon.

While the result was disappointing, there were still several strong individual performances and positive signs against a Swans side that capitalised heavily on momentum and field position.

Captain Kyle Baskerville led from the front with a standout performance through the midfield, collecting 34 disposals and working tirelessly around the contest. Zach Rankin was also influential with 31 disposals and eight inside 50s, while Jack Cleaver continued his strong form with 27 disposals and six inside 50s.

Tom Joyce battled hard all day with 20 disposals and four tackles, while Cameron Eardley and Jono Marsh both provided strong support around the ground with 17 disposals each.

Despite narrowly winning the inside 50 count 43-41 and dominating the hit-outs 41-27 through Luke Strnadica, the Sharks were unable to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal, finishing with an accuracy rate of 50% compared to Swan Districts’ highly efficient 64%.

The opening term ultimately proved costly, with the Sharks chasing the game for the remainder of the afternoon after trailing by 33 points at quarter time.

The Sharks will now look to regroup quickly ahead of next week, with the bye surrounding the State Game expected to provide an opportunity for several injured players to return to the side in the coming weeks, a boost that could prove important as the season progresses.

RESERVES: TOUGH DAY OUT FOR SHARKS RESERVES

East Fremantle’s Reserves endured a difficult afternoon at Steel Blue Oval, going down to Swan Districts 20.15 (135) to 2.6 (18).

The Swans controlled the contest from the outset, applying relentless pressure and dominating territory throughout the four quarters. East Fremantle struggled to generate sustained momentum and found it difficult to move the ball cleanly against an experienced Swan Districts outfit.

The statistical difference across the game highlighted the challenge faced by the Sharks, with Swan Districts recording 428 disposals to East Fremantle’s 230 while also dominating inside 50s 62-30.

Despite the result, several Sharks continued to compete strongly across the afternoon.

Jake Boniwell was one of East Fremantle’s better performers, collecting 24 disposals and providing consistent effort around the contest. Rhama Evans also worked tirelessly with 21 disposals and four inside 50s, while Kaydn Wilson battled hard with 17 disposals.

Thomas Backhouse showed composure with 13 disposals and six marks, while Lincoln Martignago and Riley Marr both continued to work hard.

Mason Fidzewicz managed to hit the scoreboard with a goal, while Taj Kale also added a major for the Sharks.

While the scoreboard was disappointing, the group will take valuable lessons from the performance and will aim to respond strongly in the weeks ahead.

COLTS: SHARKS COLTS FALL TO SWANS DESPITE BRIGHT START

East Fremantle’s Colts side showed patches of promising football but were ultimately defeated by Swan Districts 15.15 (105) to 10.6 (66) on Saturday morning.

The Sharks started brightly, kicking three goals in the first quarter to take an early lead before Swan Districts gradually wrestled back control through the middle stages of the game.

Despite the final margin, there were encouraging signs from several young Sharks who continued to compete strongly throughout the four quarters.

Hunter Hearn was outstanding across half-back and through the midfield, finishing with a game-high 26 disposals in an impressive performance. Alexander Powderly also worked hard around the contest with 24 disposals and 15 hit-outs, while Nate Scott continued his consistent form with 19 disposals.

Josh Nathan found plenty of the football once again with 16 disposals and 10 tackles, applying enormous pressure throughout the game. Lachlan Wall and Reid Foot also impressed with their work rate and intensity around the contest.

Kye Ormerod continued his strong form in front of goal, finishing with two majors, while Noah Hannaford also hit the scoreboard with two goals in a lively performance up forward.

The Sharks showed efficiency in front of goal, converting at 62.5%, but Swan Districts’ ability to generate repeat inside 50 entries and control possession ultimately proved the difference.

While it was a disappointing overall weekend for the club across all three grades, there remains plenty of belief within the playing group. The upcoming State Game break will provide an opportunity for the club to reset, recover and welcome back several key injured players as East Fremantle looks to bounce back strongly over the coming rounds.
