14s and 15s Bendigo Bank Talent Academy Development Carnival vs South West
Friday October 2 saw the Bendigo Bank Academy squads take on the combined sides of the South West at ATOM Stadium
for round two of the carnival. Conditions for the day were perfect and set up what was a very exciting day’s football.
The 14’s early squad kicked the day off again, but had a slow start to the game with Jack Forrest kicking two majors
for the Sharks; however the South West kicked three goals two. The second quarter saw greater effort and intensity
from the East Fremantle boys, holding South West goalless for the quarter, whilst piling on a couple of goals taking
a lead in to half time. The second half the boys continued to play some excellent football, particularly by the
forwards and midfielders, with some exceptional ball movement, which often started off half back by the likes of
Ben Wardle. The “earlies” managed to score five goals in the last quarter to become victorious in their second outing.
Joshua Goodwin kicked three goals, with Jack Forrest and Kaleb Ruri each with two majors for the day, while Angus Wood,
James Lieschke and Mitch Cusworth each with 1 goal. Best afield for the 14’s was Ben Wardle with an outstanding effort
off half back, while James Lieschke, Angus Wood, Joshua Goodwin and Chad Warner were also standouts on the day.

The 14’s Lates also had a slow start to their day, with the South West running hard and winning the contested ball and
by the end of the first quarter the Sharks found themselves 24 points down. The second quarter saw the boys hit the
score board, with Jordan Randal kicking two goals. By half time the boys had fought back really well and with strong
work in the midfield through the rucks and on-ballers we were only 13 points down at the main break. After the half
time break the boys hit their straps and kicked 4 goals 2 points to South West’s 1 goal 1 point. The boys then continued
on their way in the fourth quarter holding South West goalless, whilst kicking 5 goals 2 ourselves. Jordan Randall and
Riley Duffy each kicked 3 goals which was an outstanding effort. Ross Collier kicked 2 and Ben Wardle, Jeremy Sharp,
Liam Mulcahy, Luke Jackson and Chris Miller each with majors for the day. Best afield for the Sharks were Luke Jackson
who produced a dominate display in the ruck. Trey Ruscoe, Sam Mckinnon, Jordan Randall, Riley Duffy and Dylan Curtin
all played to their strengths with some fantastic ball movement through the midfield and forward line.
14’s Late

The 15’s game was played over 6 quarters due to South West having only one 15’s team. This meant the first 3 quarters
were played by our 15’s Early squad and then the final 3 quarters by our 15’s late squad. The Early squad was hoping
for a better start to their game unlike their Tuesday game kicking 3 goals 3 to South West’s 1 goal 1 in the first
quarter. The boys then really took control in the second stanza where they outscored South West 5 goals 6 points to
1 point in a dominate display of football. With excellent work around the stoppages, crisp ball movement through the
corridor in to the forward line and resolute defence from the back 7 the Sharks continued to pile on the scoreboard
pressure and by the end of the third quarter had opened up a 55 point lead. Dylan O‘Reilly, Scott Read, Jaylen Pailthorpe
and Max Murphy each kicked 2 goals and Ben Elsbury, Tom Monaghan and Tom Collins all contributed single majors for East
Fremantle.
15’s Early

The 15’s Late squad kicked off after the half time break and started slow against a team that was already warmed-up for
the contest. Our boys kicked 1 goal 4 points to 4 goals 2 points which wasn’t a great start for the Sharks. The Sharks
began to hit their straps in the second, winning more of the contested ball and had they kicked a little accurately the
boys may have been able to get closer than 8 points they still trailed South West, however the improved play was very
pleasing. The final quarter saw the Sharks boys run over the top of their opponents, keeping them scoreless, whilst
kicking 3.3 ourselves to eventually grab the lead by 13 points. Kaine Burgess kicked 3 majors for the Lates, with Nic
Blazevich and Jack Redman each with 1 goal. Best afield for the Lates squad were Lachlan Duncanson, Sam Whitaker,
Chayse Clarke, Kaine Burgess and Isaac Richards.
