Malaxos parts ways with the Sharks
Following a meeting with the President Mark Stewart and CEO Todd Shimmon this morning, Stephen Malaxos has decided to resign from his position as Senior Coach at the East Fremantle Football Club. The Board of Directors accepted his resignation at a meeting this afternoon.
Stephen stated, “I’ve tried my very best for the East Fremantle Football Club, and I wish the Club the very best for the future”.
Stephen has been an ornament to the game, and the Club is indebted to Stephen and the Malaxos family.
‘Stav’ as he is known, began his career at Claremont in 1979, where he won the 1984 Sandover Medal and was named the Western Australian Sports Star of the Year. He was recruited to Hawthorn in the VFL where he played 9 games, before returning to Claremont.
1986 was highlighted with his selection as All Australian captain. The following season saw him join the West Coast Eagles where he featured in 66 games over the better part of four years. Voted his club's best and fairest player in his debut season, and selected in another All Australian team two years later, in 1990 he was selected as captain.
In 1992 Stephen transferred to East Fremantle, where he played 138 WAFL games over the next eight seasons, winning club fairest and best trophies in 1991, 1994 and 1995, and skippering the 1992 and 1994 premiership teams.
In 1999 Stephen was appointed Paul Roos’ assistant coach at the Sydney Swans fulfilling a role as midfield coach and coach of the reserves for seasons 1999 to 2003.
Season 2004 saw him back in WA with the Fremantle Dockers initially working with the forwards before making the transition to the midfield.
In season 2010, Stephen returned to Shark Park as Colts Coach and made an immediate impact, taking the young colts squad through to premiership success.
At the end of 2010, Stephen was appointed Head Coach of the East Fremantle Football Club. Over the last 4 and a half seasons, Stav has led the Sharks to a Grand Final appearance (2012) and a Preliminary Final (2014). Stephen’s contribution to the Club and to the game is immense and we thank him for his dedication and commitment.
Brad Dodd has been appointed as the interim Head Coach by the Board this afternoon. Brad was originally rookie drafted by the Fremantle Football Club in 1997 from East Fremantle and was elevated to the senior list in 1998. He played 50 games over four seasons at the club before a knee injury in 2001 saw him sidelined and subsequently delisted the following year
After Fremantle, Brad signed on to play with Claremont, helping the team reach the grand final in 2003. He retired at the end of the 2005 WAFL season.
In 2009 Dodd decided to follow a coaching pathway that saw him begin at the Claremont Football Club, coaching the 15’s Development Squads alongside Phil Smart. In 2010 Brad graduated to a League role as backs coach, in a side that went on to the Grand Final that narrowly lost to Swan Districts by 1 point. The following two years Dodd was part of the coaching panel at the Tigers that won back to back flags.
In 2014 Brad headed to his old hunting ground where he took on the role of League Bench Coach at the Sharks, however he went over and above the call of duty, often working closely on the development of individuals within the playing group.
In season 2015, Brad has been in a dual role as League Midfield Coach and Colts Backs Coach at the Sharks, demonstrating outstanding communication and feel for the game.
