WAFL: First round showdown kicks off support for MND sufferers

The East Fremantle Sharks and Swan Districts will battle it out at Shark Park on March 16 - competing not only for the first win of the season, but also vying for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA Kerry Coates - Joyce Allen perpetual trophy.

The second annual perpetual trophy match is part of the clubs’ joint Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day, held in honour of East Fremantle’s renowned premiership player and coach, Kerry Coates, and Swan Districts’ life member Joyce Allen.

Kerry Coates passed away in 2007, two years after he was diagnosed with MND while Joyce Allen succumbed to the disease in early 2012 at 68 years of age. MND is a terminal neurological condition with no known cause or cure. It robs patients of their ability to speak, move and eat, but leaves the mind healthy and intact.

East Fremantle Football Club CEO Adam Kelly said he couldn’t think of many diseases more horrific than MND.

“It’s terrifying to think of having your full mental capability but being trapped in a body that is failing you, unable to live a normal life,” he said.

“I’m confident that this annual match is something that East Fremantle’s members and supporters will get behind, as their tremendous support both on and off the field is one of the club’s most valued assets.”

Swan Districts CEO Tom Bottrell said that having met both Kerry Coates and Joyce Allen and also having a great friend currently living with MND, he had seen what a terrible illness it was.

“We are committed to honouring Joyce and Kerry and in the process raising awareness which we hope will in some way lead to a cure,” he said.

Both Clubs ask that their members and supporters donate on the day to one of the MNDAWA volunteers who will be rattling tins at the oval.

MNDAWA executive officer Mathew Brown said the fundraiser was an opportunity for the football community to contribute to defeating MND while also easing the pain of those with the deadly disease.

“MNDAWA relies heavily on fundraising and community support, and we are committed to increasing awareness of MND in Western Australia in order to continue the crucial work we do in the community, including supporting research into finding a cure,” he said.

The Kerry Coates – Joyce Allen perpetual trophy match will kick off at 2.10pm at East Fremantle Oval.

At the Clubs’ last meeting in the 2012 Preliminary Final, East Fremantle defeated Swan Districts by 27 points at Steel Blue Oval.

East Fremantle have won 53 games of the 79 games played against Swan Districts at East Fremantle Oval.
