WAFL Preseason Recap thanks to Sponsors The Left Bank
Thanks to club Sponsor The Left Bank, please see below our Preseason WAFL & Reserves Match Day Recap:
Reserves
The Reserves had a narrow victory over West Perth in the teams first practice game at Pentanet Stadium on the weekend. Both teams played an extended squad and the Sharks ran out narrow 2 point winners after a late Tom Wallis goal.
Kicking with the breeze in the first quarter, the Sharks were efficient going forward, kicking 5 goals to 1 to open up a handy lead. Over the next 2 quarters the Falcons had long periods of momentum and ate into the lead. An arm-wrestle ensued in the last quarter and West Perth hit the lead only to see a last minute goal square scramble saw the ball farmed out to Tom Wallis, who made no mistake from the top of the goal square.
Multiple goalkickers on the day were Phoenix Knight (2) and Matt Burton (2) while Jayke Scott, Eddie Simpson and Sam Collins were solid contributors.
League
East Fremantle and West Perth kicked off their 2023 campaign with a trial match at Pentanet Stadium last Saturday. The Sharks burst out of the blocks with 3 goals in 5 minutes, before West Perth capitalised on some poor turnovers to keep their scoreboard ticking over. Despite kicking with the breeze, the Sharks headed into quarter time only 2 points up.
The Falcons took advantage in the 2nd quarter to open up a handy lead- again punishing the Sharks on turnover and controlling ground position through some excellent stoppage work. Down by 26 at the half, the Sharks would need a big 3rd quarter. Despite creating some chances the margin was only reduced to 19 points as both teams headed into the last break.
It was a positive start to the last but despite having the better of the play for the first 15 minutes, the Sharks failed to hit the scoreboard and West Perth kicked 3 late goals to win by 38 points.
The only multiple goalscorer for the Sharks was Dillon O’Reilly (2) while better contributors were Cam Eardley, Michael Tassone and Milan Murdock.
The Sharks head to Revo Stadium next Saturday to take on the Tigers in their final practice match before Round 1.
