AOS Sharks Futures - Round 1 Recap
After a long pre-season and a couple of scratch matches to tune things up, our fist game finally arrived.
We headed out to take on Perth at Mineral Resources Park. On a warm Sunday morning with no breeze to speak of the boys were primed for a strong first up performance.
The first quarter started at a frantic pace with the ball zipping from end to end. An early goal to us set the tone for the day with goals coming thick and fast. An even first quarter saw both sides go into quarter time with three goals each.
The second quarter commenced with Perth getting on top in the midfield and starting to apply some scoreboard pressure with 4 consecutive goals, pushing out to a 23-point lead. A couple of late goals to EF kept us in touch going into half time 11 points down.
After well-earned half-time break we came out full of run in the third quarter and applied enormous pressure to turn the ball over consistently allowing our forwards to capitalise and add 5 goals for the term, whilst keeping Perth to just 2.
Going into the 4th quarter with a 6-point lead, the last quarter was always going to be a tight affair. In a pulsating final term, it was goal for goal with the lead changing hands many times over the 23 minutes. Some strong defensive efforts in the last few minutes of the quarter repelled Perth’s consistent attempts to kick the winning goal. We held on to a 1-point lead for the last few minutes of the quarter, before a terrific team defensive effort rebounded the ball to our forward zone , allowing a goal on the final siren to give us a 7-point victory.
It was a fantastic display of Futures football put on display by both sides in very warm conditions.
Some better players on the day for us : Kaiden Summerell, a strong 4 quarter game along with 3 goals, Matt Radojkovich provided a great target up forward with 4 goals, Alex Redmile was a very reliable down back and used the ball with precision, and Jake Boniwell took some strong marks up forward to finish with 2 goals.
We look forward to our next game this Saturday 18th March , 8am at Pentanet Stadium in Joodalup.
