Congratulations 2022 WAFLW Rogers Cup Premiers/ WAFLW Grand Finals Wrap-Up
Our Youth Girls team capped off an outstanding first season under Alex Williams to run away convincing 12.6 – 78 to 2.5 – 17 winners and 2022 WAFLW Rogers Cup Premiers, over long-time rivals Peel Thunder.
This was the first Rogers Cup Premiership that East Fremantle have won.
The Sharks were on from the outset, kicking 3 goals in the first quarter to Peel’s 1. From there, the Sharks stretched their lead at every break to run away 61-point victors.
Alicia Blizard was electric up-forward, kicking 3-goals in the first half and finishing with 4 for the game, whilst Tayah Palmer was also on fire with 3-goals. Madison Evans was judged best afield for the Sharks in the midfield and up forward. Maya Louvel-Finn had one of her best games for the season, stopping almost every single Peel entry with an intercept mark.
The WAFLW Reserves Grand-Final was a much closer game, but ultimately Claremont were too good on the day, beating East Fremantle’s 2.2 – 14 with their 3.5 – 23.
One goal and three behinds in the first quarter for the Tigers had the Sharks playing catch-up for the rest of the game, and ultimately Claremont were able to hold off a brave Sharks outfit.
Paisley Prentice was the Shark’s best, providing an anchor down back, whilst Emma Faulkner contributed the Sharks’ two goals for the game. Emmelie Fielder was dominant in the ruck, providing great opportunities for the rovers.
The WAFLW League Grand Final was a spectacle that was anyone’s game until the dying moments, with Claremont running away 7.4 – 46 to 6.2 – 38 victors of the undefeated Home and Away side in East Fremantle.
There was just one point in it at the half, but with one more goal than the Sharks in the third quarter, the Tigers were able to maintain a buffer that led them to an 8-point victory.
Anjelique Raison proved just how clutch she was in this game, kicking 2 goals in the first quarter to equalise the game when it looked like Claremont were getting dangerous. Laura Catherine had a field-day in the ruck with 51 hit-outs, 5 tackles and 3 goals, being a clear best-on-ground. Taya Chambers was also outstanding for the Sharks down back, amassing 16 touches in a League Grand Final at just 15-years-old.
The Youth Girls premiership celebrations will continue throughout the off-season, whilst our Reserves and League sides will recover and reset for the upcoming 2023 season. The Sharks would like to thank all of our players, coaches, support staff, player squads, sponsors, and supporters for everything they have done to see us have all three teams feature in the Grand Final this year. Playing in a Grand Final is why we play footy, and the Sharks will be back and better than ever in 2023.
