R 15 - WAFLW Wrap with Daisy Brown

Tuesday, May 31, 2022 - 6:05 PM

Round 15 brought many reasons to smile for the East Fremantle Sharks, with Indigenous Round, and the A-Team Game, bringing another three-from-three weekend. The Rogers Cup, Reserves and WAFLW sides all brought home wins wearing their beautiful Indigenous Round guernseys designed by former player Tasha McAlpine.

The East Fremantle Rogers Cup side locked in the minor premiership after defeating Subiaco 7.13 – 55 to 5.2 – 32. The Sharks were trailing at the half by 4 points, but their defence kept the Lions to just one more goal for the game to run out victors.

Returning forward Tiani Teakle was dominant with 3 goals and 2 behinds, whilst Nicole Taylor-Thorpe added 2 goals of her own. Caylen Crook continued her strong form in the midfield, being awarded another Best on Ground, whilst Lexi Laffrey and Tanayah Buswell each had strong games behind the ball.

The East Fremantle Reserves continued their form to defeat Subiaco 10.11 – 71 to 0.3 – 3, holding their opponent goalless for the second time this season. It was a tight contest in the first quarter, with the Sharks kicking just the one behind, but a six-goal second quarter sealed the Sharks’ fate.

Jessie McDonald was lively up forward kicking 4 goals, whilst returning player Katelyn Catalano kicked 2 goals despite having not played for 630 days. Samara Pluschke was also strong for the Sharks, being judged Best on Ground.

East Fremantle’s WAFLW side provided an outstanding showing for the second-ever A-Team Match in support of Ariella Italiano, running away convincing 9.9 – 63 to 2.1 – 13 winners. The League team were dominant from the outset, having both more disposals than Subiaco (243-180) and out-tackling Subiaco (88-68) in what was a physical contest.

Ashlee Atkins and Sharon Wong led the way for the Sharks, each notching up 21 disposals, with Sharon Wong also laying 11 tackles to be named Best on Ground. Julia Teakle continued her outstanding debut WAFLW season with 3 goals, whilst Mylee Leitch had 2 of her own. Doma Fedele took out Play of the Day with an impressive snap for goal to go with her 11 possessions.

It was a tremendously successful weekend for the Sharks both on and off the field, with our fundraiser for the TBC1D24 Foundation also going ahead. Ariella Italiano suffers from a rare genetic condition TBC1D24 which causes frequent episodes of muscle tone loss, resulting in temporary paralysis. She is one of only 100 people in the world to be diagnosed with this gene mutation. If you wish to donate to the cause, head over to: https://www.tbc1d24foundation.com/

Our WAFLW Reserves and Rogers Cup sides get a rest for Round 16, whilst our WAFLW League side takes on West Perth at Pentanet Stadium on June 5th at 12:30pm.
