Round 2 - Ressies Match Day Review
The East Fremantle Reserves team continued their positive start to the season with a hard fought 8 point win against a dogged Swan Districts outfit on Saturday.
Kicking with the aid of a slight breeze, Swans got the jump in the first quarter, kicking 3 goals to 1 to open up a 12 point lead at quarter time. Swans pressure was good and some uncharacteristic fumbles proved costly on turnover.
East Fremantle started brightly in the 2nd, reducing the margin before Swans responded once more. The Sharks went into half time 10 points down despite the efforts of midfielders Jackson McDonald and Matt Williamson and rebounding half backs Josh Ritchie and Alex Crowe.
A strong 3rd quarter was needed and the Sharks fired, kicking 5 goals to nil to open up a 3 goal lead at 3/4 time. The lift in intensity not only saw scoring opportunities created but Swans run was stopped as the Sharks restricted them to 2 points for the quarter. Nic Bonomelli was providing a target up forward and took his opportunities, kicking 2 for the term.
Kicking with the breeze in the last and with all the momentum, the Sharks were expected to pull away. But Swans had other ideas and mounted a spirited comeback. They closed within 8 points before a Jackson McDonald snap looked to have iced the game before Swans came once again. In the end they ran out of time and the Sharks walked away with the 4 points.
Better players for the Sharks were McDonald (29 disposals and 7 clearances), Williamson (26 disposals and 9 tackles), Ritchie (22 disposals). Cody Smith (22 disposals) and Lachlan Bailey (10 disposals and 3 intercept marks) responded to their omission from the League side with solid displays. Nic Bonomelli lead the scoring kicking 4 goals to be the teams only multiple goalscorer.
The Reserves next take on East Perth on Sunday the 1st of May at New Choice Homes Park.
