Round 2 - The Left Bank Wrap Up with Taylor Cowper
The Left Bank Wrap Up with Taylor Cowper - Round 2
East Fremantle struggled in the first half but rallied in the second to leave Blue Steel Oval victors on Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks went in to the main break trailing by 26 points but turned it around in the second half kicking eight goals to the Swans two to get their first win for the season.
The focus for East Fremantle was defence at half time and that showed with a massive defensive effort which resulted in a huge come from behind win. The Sharks held the Swans to just 4 behinds in the third quarter and stopped the free flowing style of football they were playing in the first half.
East Fremantle kicked two goals and two behinds in the third to head in to final change trailing by just 16 points.
In the final term a goal from Ryan Lester-Smith put the Sharks in front for the first time since the second quarter. Ball dominance in the midfield lead by Baskerville and Leggett helped move the ball forward with ease and helped the Sharks secure the win.
With two minutes to go in the game, a 50 metre penalty allowed Dillon O’Reilly to kick his third for the afternoon and put the Sharks up by three. Shortly after a goal to Lester-Smith secured the win for the Sharks.
Sharks Captain Matthew Jupp said post game that it was a team effort. “Our spirit and our unity shone through in the last half and we were able to get the win.”
After a loss to Peel in round one it was important for the Sharks to get a win on the board to get the season heading in the right direction. “To be one and one and even the ledger is really important”, said Jupp. “To get a nice team win is going to set our season up.”
East Fremantle take on East Perth in Northampton next Saturday the 30th of April, playing for the Seroja Cup - sponsored by TMS - Technical Maintenance Support.
