Round 7 | Match Report
East Fremantle have fallen short of the Claremont Tigers in very wet conditions at New Choice Homes Park, with another slow start proving costly in the 6.10 (46) to 14.4 (88) loss.
It is the second consecutive loss where the Sharks have given up a six-goal to one head start in the first term, a flaw that the playing group will look to rectify before next week’s clash against Swan Districts.
East Fremantle trailed by 27 points at quarter-time and were unable to trim the margin despite finishing with just two less scoring shots, 6 less disposals and two more inside-50’s than the Tigers.
First year Shark Luke English continued his fantastic form in the midfield to be adjudged the PetraClean Player of the Day. The ball-magnet recorded over 25 disposals for the fourth time in his five games for the club on Saturday, finishing with 29 disposals, five tackles and three inside-50’s.
Cameron Eardley was once again named amongst the best players on the ground as he recorded 23 disposals, 5 marks and three tackles. The midfielder has had an outstanding month which included being named amongst the best on ground during last week’s state game.
Arguably the most impressive part of the day from an East Fremantle perspective was the debut of Finn Gorringe. Last year’s Colts Best and Fairest winner was named amongst the WAFL’s best on ground for the day and showed early in the game why he had earnt his spot in the side. The defender ran back with the flight to take a strong mark on the wing within the first 15 minutes of the match and deservedly received a warm applause from the East Fremantle crowd.
Jonathan Marsh spent large patches of the game in the middle of the ground as he recorded 21 disposals, nine tackles, four inside 50’s and a goal to maintain his spot in the top 10 of the WAFL goalkicking chart.
Blaine Boekhorst also had 23 possessions and an impressive seven inside 50’s while Jarrad Jansen’s 18 disposals, four tackles and 11 hit-outs had him named amongst the Sharks best.
Round 8 of the Optus WAFL Premiership Season sees the Sharks take on the Swan Districts at Blue Steel Oval. Bill Monaghan’s side will be looking to return to the winners list against a much-improved Swans side in a match where the winner will likely finish the Round in the top 5.
