THE SHARKS SCRAPE THROUGH AGAINST SWANS
East Fremantle have returned to the winners list after grinding out a win over Swan Districts at New Choice Homes Park, winning 8.11 (59) to 3.12 (30).
The Sharks kept their opposition to just three goals for the second time in five games, something coach Bill Monaghan will be extremely impressed with.
Jarrad Jansen had his best game this season and led the way in the midfield in the absence of Nick Kommer. His best on ground performance included a game-high 31 disposals, 14 marks, 5 tackles and a goal. Cameron Eardley also continued his good form in the middle of the ground, showing his usual class on his way to 27 disposals and 5 tackles.
The captain of East Fremantle, Jon Griffin, showed once again why he is one of the premier ruckman in the competition, recording an impressive 45 hit outs to give the East Fremantle midfield first use of the ball.
Up forward Luke Strnadica continued his solid goal kicking form with two more goals this week, one of only two multiple goal kickers for the day as he moved up to first on the club goal kickers for season 2019.
Matthew Jupp was once again named amongst the best players, marshalling a strong defensive effort by the Back 7. The East Fremantle vice-captain recorded 9 disposals and 6 marks but it was his ability to spoil the ball and restrict the Swan Districts scoring that was most impressive.
Another positive to come out of Saturday’s win was the debut of Max Murphy, who was very impressive recording 11 disposals and kicked the opening goal of the game.
About getting the win on debut, he said: “It was a pretty good experience. The win was great, it took Joe Hebiton 17 league games to get his first win so I’m very happy to get one first up.”
“I’m really happy to make my debut, it wasn’t the best game individually or as a team but we kept fighting and got the reward. I had lots of family here so it was very exciting.”
“It was great kicking my first goal, I was getting a lot of advice from the Swan Districts players on how embarrassing it would be if I missed which it would’ve been because I was pretty close, but I blocked it out and just focused on taking it as a normal kick”
This week the Sharks take on Peel Thunder at New Choice Homes Park with the side looking for successive wins for the second time this season. Bill Monaghan’s side will be looking to defeat the Thunder after the close clash between the sides earlier this year, and climb closer to the top five.
