Two in a row as the Sharks defeat spirited Demons
East Fremantle have won consecutive games for the first time since 2016, defeating a strong Perth Demons side 12.8 (80) to 9.8 (62).
The Sharks were outstanding throughout the game and capped off the win by surviving a fourth-quarter Perth comeback to ultimately win by three goals.
The first half set up the win for the Sharks, who were defensively strong all day, restricting Perth to just three goals while kicking eight goals themselves.
Cameron Eardley dominated in the midfield for East Fremantle recording a mammoth 37 disposals, nine inside-50’s and a goal.
Tom Monaghan kicked a career best three goals including a terrific set shot from the boundary line during the second quarter.
Captain Jonathon Griffin once again led the way in the middle of the ground with 34 hit outs and a long goal early in the match while Kody Manning continued to apply the pressure up forward with 8 tackles.
Tall forwards Cameron Loersch and Luke Strnadica both kicked two goals each and provided a target up forward, with the former booting a terrific mid-air goal during the third quarter to excite the East Fremantle crowd.
Nick Kommer continued his impressive form this season as he collected 30 touches while Blaine Boekhorst chalked up his 50th WAFL game, eight years after making his debut.
When asked about the win in his 50th game, Boekhorst said:
‘The teams going well - two wins in a row now. The feeling around (the group) is great at the moment, we’re believing in ourselves and our structures and it’s starting to pay off on the scoreboard’
“The four quarter efforts from the boys are starting to pay off and it’s giving the team a lot of belief”
“It’s nice to go into the derby with some form. The backline is playing well and we’re all working hard as a team. If we can get a good start and get on top early, we can really take it up to them (South Fremantle).”
Next round sees the Sharks take on South Fremantle at New Choice Homes Park in the derby on Monday the 3rd of June. Bill Monaghan’s side will be looking to get their third consecutive win and reclaim the ‘Port Derby’ bragging rights over the Bulldogs.
GOALS: 3 Monaghan / 2 Strnadica, Loersch / 1 Boekhorst, Eardley, Griffin, Fletcher, Jansen
