Sharks bolstered by debutants
The Sharks could blood up to four debutants when they take on East Perth at home this Sunday.
Ex-AFL recruit Cameron Loersch and Fraser Daly will make their debuts while Daniel Borgogno and Chris Scott are in the mix to play their first league game for the Blue and Whites.
Standing at 203cm, Loersch is known for his ability to take a strong contested mark. A forward with an excellent kick in front of goal, Loersch can also move into the ruck. Selected in the 2016 AFL Rookie Draft, the 22-year-old returned to WA after 2 years on the Gold Coast Suns’ list. Loersch has struggled with injury but made a positive return to the reserves, kicking 5 goals in the last two weeks. When speaking about playing his first senior match for his new club Loersch said “I’m excited about my first game with the Sharks, I hope to do the jumper and club proud.”
Daly’s start to the 2018 reserves season has been fantastic. Historically a defender, he’s moved forward in recent weeks, booting 4 goals including the match winner in round 2. Daly, who made the move to Perth a couple of years ago via Towns FC in our Geraldton country zone, is a passionate and loyal Shark that always gives 100%. On making his debut, Daly said “it’s a great honour and privilege to be playing league football for the club I love.”
Borgogno, a developing ruckman, missed the early part of the season but has shown some promising signs in the last two weeks. With the loss of Griffin this week, Borgogno provides another tall target for the Sharks.
2017 Colt premiership player, Chris Scott is a strong defender with a great intercept mark. Scott also came through the Geraldton country zone (Rovers FC) and had an outstanding 2017 season in the colts, culminating with the Mel Whinnen Medal for best on ground in the Grand Final.
As the coaching group promised, nine changes have been made to the squad, with Josh Cuneo, Ben Harding, Sean Henson, Corey Holmes and Leon Pearton coming into the extended 26-man side.
Unfortunately for the Sharks our injury woes continue with Jon Griffin, Alex Howson and Matthew Jupp all missing this week’s match (see injury list here).
Sunday’s match is set to be a tough one for our young side with up to 10 AFL listed players set to boost the Royals side, but a positive feeling on the track holds the group in good stead to put the previous couple of weeks behind them and be ready to play come Sunday.
