Preseason Week 2- East Fremantle v Swan Districts
For the second week in a row the preseason fixtures were impacted by heat, with all three grades timeslots being moved from their original times. The Colts and Development League both had their match times reduced in the best interest of players, umpires and staff.
The colts started their match brightly against the Swans, drawing level at ¼ time and just 2 points down at the main break. However a hard running Swan Districts overpowered the Sharks, who were only able to kick 1 goal in the second half, to record a comfortable victory.
After a sloppy start, The Development League boys took control of their match against the Swans opening up a 14 point lead by half time. Swan Districts clawed back the deficit by 6 points during the third quarter, before finishing fast with 9 scoring shots to 3 to win by 8 points. Players who put their hand up to be considered for a league spot in next week’s final round of preseason include Schleicher, who was very good inside and McCarrey, returning to the club after playing community football for the past few years, was clean up forward, kicking two goals and having a hand in two others. In encouraging signs, 2016 colts players Bailey and Clements played well, while small forward Parish looked lively, whilst also putting up an early mark of a year contender
The League game started slowly with both sides failing to impact the scoreboard in the first quarter. East Fremantle were only able to score the solitary goal, while Swan Districts were held scoreless. The second quarter opened up a little more with both sides kicking three goals and at the main break the Sharks still held a 7 point lead. With the breeze picking up in the second half, East Fremantle controlled the third quarter and had they kicked straighter may have gone in to the final quarter with the lead greater than the 21 points they held. Unfortunately, like both earlier games, Swan Districts overran the Sharks, kicking 5 goals to 1 in the final quarter to win by 5 points. Some of the positives out of the contest was the performances of young midfielders Adamini and Regan, young defender Delaney, plus the first half form of the returning Jonathon Marsh.
This week sees the Sharks playing East Perth in the final warm up game before round 1 the following week against Claremont.
