Sharks and Demons take one each in Colts and Development League
Earlier games between the Sharks and the Demons were split one apiece with the Colts going down by 33 points, but the Development League were back in the winner’s circle with a 28 point victory.
The Colts boys, with a number of changes to their team, following state commitments and injuries, were always going to find this match tough against the undefeated Demons. The Sharks boys came out with great endeavour and ferocity, however, tasking the game right up to their more fancied opponents in the first half and going in to the main break 6 points in front. Dillon O’Reilly, in his first game of Colts since completing the 16’s carnival recently, joined that famous list of players in kicking truly with his first kick in Colts football for the first of his 3 goals.
After the main break East Fremantle continued to compete hard, but the more experienced Perth side gradually began to wear our young group down and when a controversial goal was awarded to the Demons late in the third it seemed to knock the wind out of their sails.
Unfortunately the Demons over ran our boys in the last to record what would look like a convincing win, but our boys should be very proud of the their effort for all but 20 minutes of football.
For the Sharks O’Reilly finished with 3 goals, while Burton kicked 2. Corey Holmes continued his good run of form collecting 24 disposals, 7 marks and a goal, while Jayden Quill collect 23, Leon Pearton 21 and James Valentine 20. Senna Grljusich was rock solid down back, as was Peter Delaney, who is gaining form after a lengthy stint on the sidelines.
East Fremantle 9.4 (58) def. by Perth 13.13 (91)
GOALS: 3 D.O'Reilly, 2 M.Burton, 1 D.Blurton, J.Meade, N.Bonomelli, C.Holmes
BEST: J.Valentine, S.Grljusich, C.Holmes, P.Delaney, D.Blurton
The Development League got off to the start they had been hoping for in kicking six goals to two in the first quarter. The boys looked far slicker with their ball handling and movement of the footy and by the early stages of the second looked as though they could blow the game apart. However inaccuracy in front of goal, where the boys kicked 5 consecutive behinds cost the boys the chance to put the game beyond doubt and when the Demons then kicked three goals of their own the game was well and truly alive at the main break, with the Sharks leading by 19 points.
The second half seemed to be in the Sharks keeping for the most, but with both sides turning the football over it was going to be a matter of who capitalised the most. After breaking even in the third quarter the Sharks boys finished the stronger kicking 4 goals to 3 in the final stanza to record a comfortable, but not convincing win. It was super for the boys to sing the song in the change rooms after three tough weeks and with improved signs they can be confident in a good showing against Claremont, in what looks to be a fantastic game of footy, with 3rd taking on 5th.
For the Sharks Perry kicked 3 goals, as did the inform Jacob Green, whilst Ricciardello and Krakouer kicked two apiece. Young Tom Marshall was outstanding in the midfield collecting 18 poised possessions, while Schleicher (27) and Hooker (25) had the ball the most.
