R2 Colts & R6 Futures Match Day Review
R2 Colts Match Day Review
After coming of a good win the previous week, it was important for the colts to back it up with a good showing.
On a damp Steel Blue Oval, we got off to a fast start in the first quarter playing some good free flowing football. James Spadanuda and Presley Campbell provided us with some great run from defence allowing us to get some direct entries into our forward 50. The forwards capitalised on the work from kicking 3 goals for the quarter and setting up a 15-point lead at quarter time.
Swans adjusted their game in the 2nd quarter to stop our run and turn the game into a scrappy affair. Whilst we were not able to produce the free-flowing link up football like the first quarter we continued to win enough ball around the ground allowing us to grow our lead out to 27 points at the main break.
The second half of the game saw us slowly get on top of Swans in most areas of the game, with us winning the more of the ball and working it through the midfield to finish strongly with a 4-goal final quarter.
Harry Pickett was a solid contributor down back repelling many of Swans attacking moves throughout the day, Will Anderson finished with 22 disposals and 9 tackles through the midfield and Sam Otto worked tirelessly in the ruck , with 33 disposals , 7 hit outs and a goal to finish his day. Our two key forwards in Griff Vladich (3 goals) and Jack Cocking (2 goals) worked well together.
The colts will enjoy a week off this week before looking towards playing Perth at the WACA 5pm on Saturday 29th April.
R6 - Futures Match Day Review
The futures boys headed to Steel Blue Oval on Sunday morning to take on Swans in our last game of the Futures carnival. Both the boys and coaching staff were keen to finish on a high.
A fast start highlighted with some strong link up footy allowed us to get the jump on Swans and set up a five-goal lead at quarter time. The 2nd quarter continued in much the same way with us dominating all over the ground and getting the result on the scoreboard holding a 57-point lead at the main break.
It was important in the second half that we maintained the hard work and team focussed approach to our play. The boys ran in waves, using the big ground to their advantage and continually looking to switch and spread across the oval to link up and share the football around. The good work from our defence and midfield was finished well up forward with us finishing with a total of 23 goals for the game.
Key contributors for the day were Jake Boniwell and Kaydn Wilson with 6 and 5 goals, respectively. Oliver McManus and Tom Grylls won plenty of the ball through the midfield and provided our forwards with plenty of opportunities all day.
Overall, the Futures carnival was a great success with us winning four of our six games. It was great to give the boys plenty of opportunities, some in positions they have never played before. It was also most pleasing to see the boys come together from their community clubs and the Midwest zone to form a strong bond and develop into a great group of young men.
A big Thanks to all the coaches and support staff who committed many hours to the program, all with the one vision in mind of developing the boys both on and off the field. Thanks also the the boys and their parents for their efforts and commitment over the six months of the program.
The boys and staff will all get together tomorrow night for their annual Awards night and windup at Shirley Strickland Pavilion.
