Rd 17 - WAFLW Wrap with Daisy Brown
All three of our women's teams have finished on top of their respective ladders at the end of the season, with strong wins closing out impressive Home and Away campaigns.
Our Rogers Cup side defeated fellow finals-bound team South Fremantle 9.3 – 57 to 6.5 – 41. The Sharks dominated the contest early, kicking 5.1 to 0.4 in the first quarter. A five-goal haul for the Bulldogs in the third quarter got them back in the game, but a scoreless final quarter saw the Sharks run away with the 16-point victory.
Alicia Blizard had a successful game up forward, kicking 3 goals straight, whilst Grace Freeman and Tiani Teakle kicked 2 each. Natasha Entwistle was judged best afield after a strong game in the midfield, whilst Maya Louvel-Finn was strong as always in defence.
Our Reserves side capped off a strong campaign with a 4.4 – 28 to 2.8 – 20 victory over the Claremont Tigers, securing top spot on percentage over Claremont. Three straight goals in the first quarter set up the victory, with the Sharks getting the win despite having two less scoring shots than Claremont.
Samara Pluschke was impressive for the Sharks, as was Karen Salkilld who was judged best on ground. Jessie McDonald was lively up forward as always, adding two goals to her season tally of 17 to finish as the leading goal-kicker for the WAFLW Reserves competition.
Our WAFLW League team rounded out their domination in the WAFLW competition, finishing the season undefeated after a 10.7 – 67 to 2.3 – 15 victory over South Fremantle. The Sharks dominated possession 251-176, as well as tackles 57-52, setting up a strong victory over the Bulldogs. They also more than doubled the Bulldogs’ inside-50 count, piling on 38 to 16 inside-50s.
Melissa Caulfield was a stand-out performer for the Sharks, kicking 5 goals from 15 disposals. Amber Kinnane was judged best on ground for her 18 disposals, 5 marks and 2 tackles. Abbey Amaranti was also a strong contributor with 20 disposals and 4 marks.
Round 17 capped off a stellar season for the East Fremantle Women’s Football Club, and we look forward to a strong finals campaign ahead.
