WAFLW: SHARKS WOMEN EDGE OUT SUBIACO IN THRILLER
East Fremantle’s women produced a gutsy performance on Sunday afternoon, defeating Subiaco by 13 points at Sullivan Logistics Oval, 5.6 (36) to 3.5 (23).
In what was a low-scoring and hard-fought contest, the Sharks showed tremendous defensive resolve to keep the Lions at bay throughout the afternoon. East Fremantle did their best work when it mattered most, gradually building their lead across the second half to secure a valuable four points on the road.
The Sharks were scoreless in the opening term but held Subiaco to just a single behind, and from there they grew into the contest, adding to their tally in each subsequent quarter while keeping the Lions’ scoring opportunities to a minimum. By three-quarter time East Fremantle had edged ahead, and they held firm in the final term to see the game out.
Jae Flynn led the way up forward and was named among the best, while Olivia McCay, Cienna Leslie, Tiani Teakle and Zoe Keley were also outstanding contributors across the ground. Leslie, Flynn, Lara Fuller, Chelsea Natta and Eve Wilson-Sieber each kicked a goal for the Sharks.
It was an important win for the East Fremantle women’s group, coming on the road against a Subiaco side that made them earn every moment of it. The result will provide a significant confidence boost as the season continues.
ROGERS CUP: SHARKS ROGERS CUP SIDE FIRE UP FOR BIG WIN
East Fremantle’s Rogers Cup side delivered an impressive performance on Sunday, accounting for Subiaco by 37 points, 9.6 (60) to 3.5 (23).
The Sharks were dominant from the first bounce, kicking three goals to none in the opening quarter to set the tone early. East Fremantle’s lead continued to grow throughout the contest as they converted their opportunities efficiently, with Subiaco unable to find a response to the Sharks’ intensity and forward pressure.
Olivia Keady and Lucinta Akerman were among the most damaging forwards on display, each finishing with two goals, while Bella Godecke also contributed a pair to prove highly effective in attack. Taila Rogers, Chelsea Palmer and Indi Richardson each added one to round out the Sharks’ scoring.
Clarys Gourlay, Keady, Alicia Camilleri, Godecke and Brooke Peachey were all named in the best for East Fremantle, typifying the all-round team effort that made the win so convincing.
The result was a pleasing one for the Rogers Cup group, who will look to carry that momentum and confidence into their next outing.
