SHARKS FALL SHORT AGAINST LIONS IN ROUND 11
East Fremantle suffered a disappointing defeat away from home on Saturday afternoon, going down to Subiaco by 25 points at Sullivan Logistics Stadium, 7.5 (47) to 11.6 (72).
The Lions proved too strong in a contest the Sharks were unable to wrestle control of, with Subiaco establishing a foothold early and maintaining their advantage through the middle stages of the game. While East Fremantle continued to compete and showed patches of intent, the Lions’ ability to consistently find the scoreboard proved the difference on the day.
The afternoon held special significance for the Sharks, with Harry Marsh reaching the milestone of 100 WAFL games — a testament to his consistency, professionalism and dedication to the club over a long and distinguished career. East Fremantle also welcomed debutant Tom Grylls to the WAFL stage, with the young forward marking his first senior appearance by kicking a goal.
Jono Marsh was among the most influential Sharks on the ground, producing an energetic display through the midfield and adding a goal to his efforts. Zac Rankin, Tom Joyce and Jack Budarick were also named among the best for East Fremantle, each working hard to provide drive and connection across the ground.
Up forward, Liam Robinson continued his strong season with two goals, while Griffin Vladich, Patrick Knight, Cameron Eardley and Marsh each added one to the tally. The Sharks generated opportunities inside 50 but were unable to capitalise at the rate needed to challenge Subiaco’s lead.
The result is a setback for the Sharks, who will be eager to respond quickly as the season enters a critical phase.
East Fremantle now turns its attention to next week’s home clash against Claremont at The Good Grocer Park, with the added incentive of the Kai Fella Foundation Match providing extra motivation to put in a performance the wider community can be proud of.
RESERVES: LIONS TOO STRONG FOR SHARKS RESERVES
East Fremantle Reserves were unable to match Subiaco on Saturday, going down 87 to 61 at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
The Sharks made a bright start, leading after the first quarter thanks to four goals to three, but Subiaco gradually asserted their dominance through the second and third terms to take a commanding advantage into the final break. East Fremantle battled hard throughout, but the Lions’ forward line proved too productive to contain, with Tim Simmons kicking six goals to be the decisive figure up front.
Jaxon Graham, Toby Alker, Joel Nathan, Jack Annison and Ryan Martin were the standouts for the Sharks, doing their best to keep the side competitive. Nathan, Ryan Martin and Jack Cocking each kicked two goals to lead the East Fremantle scoring.
The Sharks will look to regroup and return to winning form as the season progresses.
COLTS: TOUGH ROAD LOSS FOR COLTS IN SUBIACO
East Fremantle Colts were unable to replicate their recent form on Saturday, falling to Subiaco by 18 points, 6.5 (41) to 9.5 (59).
The Sharks started brightly, holding a slender advantage after the first quarter, but Subiaco steadily took control through the second and third terms to push clear. East Fremantle kept plugging away and showed some positive signs, but the Lions proved too consistent on the day, with Connor Boylson kicking three goals to lead their attack.
Kye Wilson was the Sharks’ most productive forward with two goals, while Taj Kale, Isaac Boothey, Cassius Wall and Ben Wood each added one. Nate Scott, Dylan Connelly, Ben Gatti, Michael Baker and Noah Hannaford were the best performers for East Fremantle.
The Colts will look to respond when they return home in Round 12.
